Cockapoos are one of the oldest doodles, they have been around since roughly the 1950s originating from the U.S. More homeowners wanted a family-friendly dog that hardly shed. The cockapoo quickly became a household favourite.
Cocker Spaniels were the #1 breed in America during the 1940s. It was believed the rise of popularity due to the black cocker spaniel named My Own Brucie during 1940/41. Sadly he passed away in 1943 and many newspaper companies published an obituary even the New York Times.
In the 1960s Poodles rose to the number 1 spot for two consecutive decades. Though in the 50s the dog was marketed on everything from poodle skirts to musical figurines and stuffed toys. It is thought that the marketing of the poodle caused the popularity of the breed for two decades.
Cockapoos are a fun-loving dog to have around. They are known for loving life as they are extremely playful and love the attention. These dogs bond very quickly with their family. Cockapoos are very intelligent coming from two smart breeds (cocker spaniel and poodle) they love to learn new tricks and sports. They also love to snuggle and have downtime with the family. Laying beside their humans is one of their favourite places to be.

These pups coats do not shed much and have minimal odour, making them good for those with allergies. Cockapoos coats like poodles may not have their curls come in until after their first haircut. Though they still need grooming due to their curly coats. Cockapoos have 3 types of coats- poodle curly, wavy, and flat coat. Each coat has different grooming requirements; some require a little more care than others. Brushing regularly is necessary mostly on the poodle curly coat, the other two coats still need brushing but not as often.
Tips-
Brush hair from hind to front to pull hair up and remove tangles
Use of spray detangle works wonders
Brush before bathing and brush again when hair is semi dry, blow drying helps keep hair soft and less tangles
Their hair grows so will need cutting in a style of your choice
Being a mix of two intelligent breeds, these pups love to learn whether that’s learning new tricks or exercise.
Mental exercise can keep a dog happy and busy even tiring them out like a walk would. Teaching tricks helps the puppy bond with you and the family, while also giving them enjoyment from the praise. Puzzles can also keep a cockapoo entertained.
Physical exercise is a great way to keep them busy and spend time with the family. Walks and playing with toys allows the dog to burn off energy and not allow them to get into mischief. Cockapoos love to swim whether that's in a puppy pool in the yard or a safe body of water.
Just remember to keep the exercise amount to the correct age of the dog. Practice safe swimming, never leave the dog unattended in or around water. Life jackets are also recommended for safety reasons in bodies of water.
Training isn’t something that will be done within a week but rather it will take consistent repetition. Make training fun for the puppy and work at their pace. Puppies have a lot to learn such as potty training, obedience, crate training, being social both human and animal, and grooming. These are just the basic, families may find other ones to add to fit their lifestyle
